Triumvirate : Jennifer Abessira, Marie Hazard, Margaux Valengin

Céline and Kimberly

On Wednesday evening we visited the exhibition 'Triumvirate' in Brussels. It's an exhibition curated by MarineTanguy, NicolasHugo and Eva Kirilof (also known as TheBubblist). We planned to go with the three of us, but Meltem had to take some well deserved rest after working a lot on another project in which she creates the concept art. Another talented gal came along, Jorien Geelen editorial assistant at TalkiesMagazine.

Let's focus on the exhibition now. We were very impressed by the work by the three artists Jennifer Abessira, Marie Hazard and Margaux Valengin. They are all still so young and have a grand future ahead of them, without a doubt.

Eva told us that they wanted to show the next generation of artists. Triumvirate opens a dialogue between oil paintings, imprinted textiles and conceptual photographs in an effort to highlight how the action of creating an image can be constantly redefined through the use of innovative techniques and mediums.”

Jennifer Abessira works with all kinds of mediums. Whenever you look at her instagram or tumblr you'll notice that she has a very creative mind. Eva told us a story about Jennifer and how she got in a car accident a few years ago. The result of this accident was five months in the hospital. During this period she became fascinated by all kinds of things and in the words of Eva 'internet became her best friend'. The photos exhibited here were all different pairs. For example a selfportrait paired with a detail of a showercurtain. Besides photography she works with little images of etchings she finds.

Marie Hazard works with textile, but in such a way that her work becomes a painting. There was a little fragment, with a simple pattern, very harmonized/unified. Whilst the grand work opposite this one was a big textile canvas with different little patches attached to it. She used words, paint, textile, .. to create this piece. In this work the boundary between a textile art work and a painting is almost nonexistent, it even reminded me (Céline) of some Cy Twombly’s paintings. In front of the window was a somewhat sculpture of hers. In this piece she used three different parts who eventually became one. Besides textiles, she used parts of tires.

Margaux Valengin exhibits three grand canvases in this exhibition. What immediately popped up in our minds was our admiration for her use of colours. In her early years she painted figuratively, where in her recent work she works around nature. We were loving the dynamic in her paintings and the plant like motives.
